Dr Botes is a specialist surgical gastroenterologist specialising in colorectal surgery, or surgery of the colon, rectum, anus and pelvic floor. He has a specific focus on colorectal cancer, robotic surgery, hernia surgery, benign colonic disease and gastrointestinal failure.
After qualifying as a general surgeon at Stellenbosch University, he spent 2 years as a Trauma Surgery consultant at Tygerberg Hospital. It was while facing with the devastating gastrointestinal injures in his patients, that he took a personal interest in gastrointestinal failure and reconstruction techniques.
In 2023, after a further 2 years of subspecialist training, he completed his in surgical gastroenterology fellowship in colorectal surgery. This fellowship coincided with the roll out of robotic surgery at Tygerberg hospital.
He has been an active member of the Da Vinci robotics team, involved in multiple robotic firsts for the country.Dr Botes remains a senior lecturer and staff member at Stellenbosch University.
Dr Botes serves on the executive committee of the South African Society of Endoscopic Surgeons (SASES) and The South African Hernia Interest Group (HIG). He is a founding executive of the SAM Registry and a long term member of the South African Colorectal Society.
